Manager

For the developer the main document manager is the central part of the Bellshape Assessment Platform. From now on it will be referred to as the manager. It is accessible via a webbrowser (Internet Explorer 6 and up) through http://yourdomain/manager. The manager is where you will be building and editing the building blocks you need for creating your assessment website.

Below you will find a screenshot with a description of the different parts of the manager. As the development of the manager is an ongoing process, the description is somewhat of a moving target. But from the current description you will get the general idea about the workings of the Bellshape document manager, even if it might not be up to date.

(When a folder has a minus sign in front of it, it can be collapsed like folders in Windows Explorer. When it has a plus sign, it can be 'exploded'.)

Context Menu

Right clicking a document in the Explore tree (left side of the manager screen) pops up a context menu from which different actions on the selected document can be started. Mind: the actions you choose will have their effect on or in the folder where the cursor is postioned! The table below present an overview of the actions in the right context menu.

NameDescription
NewOpens the document type dialog from which may create a new document of the chosen type. The Editor opens with a blank document. After clicking the Save button, the document is saved at the level (=Folder) you started when creating the document.
EditOpens the selected document in the standard document editor of the Bellshape Assessment Manager.
EditXMLOpens the selected document in XML mode. The document opens as a standard XML document. Normally this edit mode will be used rarely, but sometimes it can be very convenient for easily changing certain details. Not for beginners!
Show referencesShows all references to the selected document. Useful, e.g.if one wants to delete all references to an obsolete document.
CopyCopies the selected document to the clipboard. Note: When a folder is copied a so-called deep copy is made. A deep copy implies that all documents in subfolders are copied as well. Only the toplevel document is marked as '(Copy)', while the other copied documents keep their original names. So after a paste of a deep copy you may have two copies of each document, one is the original, the other the copy, and both have the same name. Here lies a large risk for confusion. So, beware when making deep copies.
PastePastes the document from the clipboard. When pasting a copied folder all the subfolders are pasted as well. See also ''Copy''.
DeleteDeletes the document. If any reference to the document exist, you cannot delete it. A reference to a document means that somewhere in the system there is another document that needs this document. When a folder is deleted all documents in the folder and subfolders are deleted as well. When you do not succeed in deleting a document, this always implies there is still a link to this document. When you do not succeed in deleting a folder, start deleting sub folders or documents in this folder. In case you than get an error-message, you will know what links to correct.
Paste link to folderPastes a ''reference'' to the document present in the clipboard to the selected location (=Folder). A link is not the document. The document itself is not copied, it will now be linked to the current folder and the effect is that you can reach the document from that folder. (Normally) a document cannot have links to two or more folders. So, if a document still has a link to another folder, the new link cannot be pasted.
Unlink from folderRemoves the reference of the document from the selected location (=Folder). The document itself is not deleted.
Warning: It is dangerous to create 'floating' documents, i.e. documents that do not have a link to any folder.'' If ever that would happen, you can find the deleted link by searching for the 'lost' document with the ''Find'' tab. Folders are special: an unlinked folder (i.e. a folder that is not attached to another folder) will 'float' to the top level.
Refresh current folderRefreshes the tree at the selected location (=Folder)(so you will see newly made documents).
ExportExports the selected document as an XML file to your local computer. Folders are exported recursively. That is, all sub folders and contents are exported as well.
ImportOpens the import dialog, to import XML documents.
